About Us
Advanced Animal Care of Mount Pleasant was founded in July 2001 by Drs. David and Leslie Steele. Both David and Leslie attended undergraduate as well as veterinary college at Auburn University (War Eagle!), graduating in 1992 and 1994, respectively. They moved to Mount Pleasant in 1994 and have been practicing veterinary medicine locally ever since.
They have two daughters, MaryLou, a first grader at Laurel Hill Primary, and Olivia, four years old. Prior to becoming a mother, Leslie spent seven years practicing feline specialty medicine and surgery at The Charleston Cat Clinic on East Bay Street. She is now practicing part-time with particular interest in internal medicine, soft tissue surgery and behavioral management. She spends any spare time and resources working to lower the population of unwanted pets in the Charleston area.
David has practiced small animal medicine in Mount Pleasant for 13 years. He has advanced training in ultrasonography, reproductive sciences and reconstructive surgery. He is a member of the Veterinary Surgical Laser Society, certified as a Penn Hip Veterinarian for the evaluation of hip dysplasia and was awarded Auburn University's Outstanding Achievement Award in 2002.
The Steeles currently have six "four-legged family members": 5 Cats and 1 Dog.
- Sox - MaryLou's cat; one-year-old tuxedo male
- Charlie - a "stocky" white and tabby male who came to the Steele's for shelter during Hurricane John and never left
- Fruity - a "sassy" 12-year-old calico that Leslie found in a parking lot downtown in 1995
- Maddie - a stray "mama" cat who had kittens in a carriage house downtown but was not wanted by the home's owners - a Steele cat since 1997
- Henry - newest addition, a young male tabby who was living behind a gas station in Mt Pleasant until becoming a Steele
- SugarPie - currently the only canine Steele family member. She was saved on her “last day” from an animal shelter in Alabama. She is “Olivia’s dog”- they are partners in crime and play!
